Instructions

  1. Peel the onion, keeping the root intact.
  2. Trim a small amount off the root side, but do not remove it completely.
  3. Cut the onion into petals, being careful not to cut all the way through the root.
  4. Soak the onion in water for at least 30 minutes to help the petals open.
  5. In one bowl, whisk together eggs and milk.
  6. In another bowl, mix flour with Italian seasoning, garlic powder, cayenne, thyme, paprika, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  7. Remove the onion from the water and let it drain.
  8. Gently spread the petals.
  9. Coat the onion in the seasoned flour, getting into all the petals.
  10. Dip the onion into the egg mixture.
  11. Coat again in the seasoned flour.
  12. Let the coated onion sit for 10 minutes.
  13. Heat peanut oil in a deep pot.
  14. Carefully fry the onion, top side down first if your pot is smaller.
  15. Fry until golden and crispy, flipping or turning carefully as needed.
  16. Drain and serve with dipping sauce.
